What Is LASIK?
/
LASIK, or laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is a type of refractive laser eye surgery designed to improve your vision. During the procedure, an eye doctor uses a special type of laser instrument to precisely reshape the cornea, which helps the eye's natural lens focus light on the retina. This correction makes it so clear, sharp vision is restored without the need for glasses or contacts.
Why Is LASIK So Popular?
Independence From Glasses and Contacts
Have you ever experienced the panic of misplacing your glasses or contacts case and not being able to effectively navigate the world around you? This isn't a concern after LASIK. The procedure makes it so you have clear vision you can rely on in any situation. Many patients are able to drastically reduce or even completely eliminate their dependence on contacts and glasses after LASIK.
Pain-Free Vision Correction
We understand that the prospect of undergoing eye surgery can be intimidating, but one of the best things about LASIK is that it's virtually pain-free. After the doctor administers anesthetic eye drops, the most you'll feel during the procedure is a slight feeling of pressure. Discomfort during recovery, like dry eye, can also be easily managed with special eye drops provided by the doctor.
Safe Surgery, Lasting Results
LASIK has been proven as a safe and highly effective procedure. According to the American Refractive Surgery Council, LASIK has a complication rate of less than 1%, and results are permanent for the vast majority of patients. Though rarely required, LASIK enhancement is a brief touch-up procedure that can bring a patient closer to their ideal results.

Blade-Free LASIK
For a Superior Treatment Experience
Traditional LASIK techniques involve a surgical blade to reshape the cornea, but modern techniques exclusively use lasers. Most eye doctors now use modern techniques whenever possible. Bladeless LASIK is often more comfortable, more accurate, and has a quicker recovery period. It also comes with a reduced risk of post-surgical complications, like dry eyes.
The LASIK Procedure
LASIK uses a laser to safely correct astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia.
Why Am I Unable
to Undergo LASIK
During Pregnancy?
If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant in the near future, you will likely have to postpone your LASIK surgery.
Pregnancy can cause temporary changes in your vision. That means if your optometrist corrects your eyesight during pregnancy, they may end up accidentally over-correcting or under-correcting your vision.
Before your laser eye surgery, your eye doctor will take precautions to ensure that you are a good candidate.
If you are at risk for any complications, then they will inform you why. We will not endanger you or your vision with procedures that could be harmful or unnecessary.
Not Eligible For LASIK? Consider PRK As an Alternative
If you're not a candidate for the LASIK procedure, that doesn't rule out your candidacy for laser vision correction in general. There are a number of treatments to correct refractive errors, and PRK may be the one for you.
Both LASIK and PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy, can address nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The main difference between the procedures is how the cornea is altered. During LASIK, a small flap is created in the outermost layer of the cornea to access the corneal tissue. During PRK, the outermost layer of the cornea is removed completely. This means that patients with thin corneas who would not qualify for LASIK can make great candidates for PRK.
PRK recovery tends to be a bit longer than LASIK recovery, but it offers you the same long-term vision correction and independence from glasses and contacts that LASIK does. If you'd like to explore your candidacy for PRK, we're ready to hear from you. Contact Drs. Wildon and Gordon Wong via an online message, or call our offices in Del Mar and La Jolla, CA:

View on GoogleAre There Risks Involved With LASIK?
Although LASIK is one of the safest vision correction procedures, it is not risk-free. As with any surgery, there is a small chance of infection. With LASIK, there is also a risk of over- or under-correction. Wrinkles in the corneal flap can also occur, and it is possible that foreign objects can become trapped under the flap before it heals. Having LASIK performed by a skilled doctor like those recommended by Drs. Gordon and Wildon Wong helps to significantly reduce your risks.
3 Common LASIK Procedure Questions
How long does LASIK eye surgery and recovery take?
LASIK surgery for both eyes can be completed in 20 minutes. It's an outpatient surgery, so a friend or family member will need to drive you home after the procedure. Recovery can take two to three months, but you'll likely see improvement in your vision within a day. Your vision may take a year to fully stabilize.
What results can I expect?
After refractive surgery, patients can experience 20/40 vision or better. These results can remain stable for a decade or longer. If you ever need correction in the years to come, you may be able to consider additional LASIK surgery enhancement.
Is LASIK surgery covered by insurance?
Refractive surgery is usually not covered by insurance. However, the surgery can save you significantly over the years, since you won't have to continually pay for new contact lenses, glasses, or both. Not to mention, the convenience of clear daily vision is utterly priceless.
